What will the weather be like in Montana while we are fishing?

Weather changes here by the hour. Bring plenty of sunscreen and your raincoat, no matter when you are coming. Typical temperatures range from the 40's -60's in April-June and September-October and 60's - 80's in July-August. The best advice is to call us the week before you are coming and we might have an idea about what to expect for weather.

When is the best time to come and fish?

No two trout waters are the same. During different times of the season certain waters are fishing better than others. That is where Long Outfitting comes in. There are so many variables to take into consideration that the best time to vacation in Montana is whenever you are available to come. Let us know when you can come, and we will let you know what will be fishable.

Where do most clients stay?

Livingston is a quaint town of about 9,000 people. There are at least a dozen chain motels along with numerous Bed & Breakfasts in the area. A detailed list is always sent with your reservation. We can also cater to fisherman staying in Bozeman, Big Timber, Chico Hot Springs, or Gardiner. Let us know if it would be more convenient for us to meet you at a location other than Livingston.

Should I bring my own fishing equipment?

This is entirely up to you. We have rental equipment for your use if it is not suitable for you to travel with your own gear. Long Outfitting operates out of a fully stocked Orvis shop so if you need any gear it can be purchased when you arrive. Licenses can also be purchased at the shop. If you want to buy a pair of waders or a new rod upon your arrival, call us ahead of time to make sure we have the item in stock. An equipment list will be sent when reservations are made.

What should my travel arrangements be?

Some clients drive to Montana, but for those who are flying you should book your flight into Bozeman. From Gallatin Field you are only 30 miles west of Livingston. You can also fly into Billings, but it is 100 miles east of Livingston. Airport p/ups in Bozeman can be arranged if absolutely necessary.

How do I get to Livingston?

If you are coming from Bozeman, head east on Interstate 90 and get off at exit 333. This puts you on Route 89. Make a left at the end of the exit ramp to head to Yellowstone Park, or make a right to head into downtown Livingston. If you are coming from Billings, head west on Interstate 90 and get off on exit 333. A left turn will take you to Yellowstone, a right turn leads to downtown.

What is there to do for a non-fisherman in and around Livingston?

Livingston has four county museums and a number of art galleries in the historic district. The nearby mountains have numerous hiking trails and abound with wildlife for non-fishing nature lovers and photographers. Horseback riding is available at local ranches. Yellowstone National Park, the oldest national park, is nearby. Bozeman is only 25 miles away. Throughout the summer months there is always a fair, a fishing show, rodeo, or antique or farmers market nearby.
